JACK IS NOT DEAD BECAUSE um the bullet clearly hits the right side of his chest not the left (missing the heart), and um he's got hotel people who are "kicking him out" who will find him shortly so he won't bleed out, and um HE CANNOT DIE OKAY?! OKAY.

Agent Carter must get renewed for S3 and fix this, 'ktnxbai.

( \o/ for Peggy/Daniel thought!!! )

EXACTLY. HE'S TOTALLY FINE. And there will be long episodes of recovery and potentially OT3ishness and it will all be ok.

oh god what if it doesn't get renewed. i know there have been other shows that have ended on cliffhangers that bad, but i don't think they have ever been my show. i don't know how to deal with it!

(please please let netflix pick it up in that case)

(lol, so my TV was having issues because I watch via antenna and it was v. cloudy out, so the show was going in and out semi-frequently. So for me, the Peggy/Daniel scene was literally one moment they are arguing, the scene jumps, and suddenly they are kissing?? I have no idea how the transition there went down.)

It wasn't much different in reality for Peggy and Daniel :P

But seriously, there'll be lots of fix it fic if the series doesn't get renewed.

I was just telling someone that Jack being injured is the perfect excuse for him to stay in LA a little longer.... :)

I'M NOT OKAY.

I WILL HAVE TO WRITE A METRIC TON OF RECOVERY FIC TO GET OVER THIS.

In no way is you writing a metric ton of fic is a bad thing :P

I don't know how hard to hope for renewal, either, because as long as the show isn't renewed he COULD be alive, but if they renew it and he turns out to be actually dead, I will cry into my keyboard, and then write a bunch of AUs. :P

Yeah, because in this universe, death is final. I mean, what's with Wilkes being totally 100% okay after being swallowed up by a Zero Matter Rift from another universe and stuff. :D

Yeah, and it's also a really classic sort of TV cliffhanger -- I mean, if I had a dollar for every cop show from my childhood that ended a season with one of the protagonists being shot ...

(okay, they didn't always make it, but still ...)

WHY DOES THIS SHOW HAVE TO HURT US LIKE THIS. D:

But do you know what I love??

You can finally call Jack a protagonist without any caveats. SQUEEE.

Actually, let me amend that. By the strickt definition of it, Peggy is the protagonist of this show. However, you can finally call Jack a good guy without any caveats. SQUEEEEE!

YESSSSS. He definitely went full, 100% good guy this season! I am going to desperately hope that it was at least partly so people would be worried when he got shot and want him to pull through (as opposed to "yay, he got shot", which would probably have been the prevailing fandom reaction after last season). He was ADORABLE this episode.

He CAN'T be dead.

Sadly, I delved into the tags after the ep aired, because I'm a masochist like that, and there was still a fair amount of 'yay he's dead!' Which ughhh. I do get why people wouldn't like him, esp on tumblr-- he's a character that seems almost explicitly designed for them to hate (straight sexist privileged white dude)-- but the beauty of him as a character is that he's not /just/ those things. And the point of his character arc is that he's growing away from that. But, sadly, tumblr culture doesn't allow room for anyone to grow and change. /sigh

(Also a lot of Peggy/Angie shippers in the tags claiming that the explicit Peggy/Daniel was a clear attempt to punch them specifically in the teeth, which... what. Peggy/Daniel has been TPTB's very clear end game from the start of the series, despite the red herring this season.)

ANYWAYS. He was totally adorable this episode! Also, the writers were manipulative little shits, hah. That whole scene with him finding the key was explicitly designed for us to think he was going to keep it a secret and try and get into the... the club thing whose name I can't think of right now... but no, he just hands it over to Peggy.

Precisely why I started liking him. I love characters who change. Man, I revelled in the lunch orders scene. This little hesitation before he realizes he would actually be helpful that way... I love that. Both for the practicality and commitment to do something and because it served as a sort of apology to Peggy for his attitude earlier. I really loved the parts where they worked together, because I think with Jack growing up into a better person they could be great friends. I'd pay to read that fic. :D

I also loved how quickly Jack figured out the key, when Peggy has had it for months to no avail. That's why they should all work as a team, they bring different perspectives to the table! (Like Daniel, solving the rift closure problem while they were all stuck in their own way of thinking.)

I'm actually finding less hate and more tragic wailing in the tags than I was expecting, although I've also been checking the Jack Thompson tag throughout the season, so I've come to expect a certain background level of dislike for him in the tag, heh. And yeah, he's basically the antithesis of what Tumblr wants from a character, but I can't help it, I've always had an enormous soft spot for the "privileged douche learns to be a better person" plot and I think they're doing a really good job with him.

... the Peggy/Angie shippers (the tinhattier ones, I mean, not the reasonable ones) are out on their own delusional shipper tree limb and they have been all season. They're convinced that Lynsey Fonseca was taken off the show to sink their ship, that the show is being hetted up as a personal insult to them, and so forth. I mean, yeah, having queer characters on the show would be great and I wish they did, but that's not going to magically make Peggy/Angie canon.

That whole scene with him finding the key was explicitly designed for us to think he was going to keep it a secret and try and get into the... the club thing whose name I can't think of right now... but no, he just hands it over to Peggy.

haha, yes! I gotta say, I never in my wildest dreams thought we'd get as much of a redemption arc this season as we did with him. I really thought he'd end the season in a shades-of-gray place where he was trying to start up a new version of the Arena Club to do it right this time (I mean, not specifically trying to start an evil cabal, but I could see him going for the "fixing the world in spite of itself" idea, with the best intentions, after 2x09's cliffhanger).

... but no! He's gone full-on good guy! He's being humble, he's working well with others, he's sharing info with Peggy ...

One thing sheron and I have been talking about (we've been talking about Jack in email a LOT over the last week while waiting for the finale) is that Jack responds really well to positive reinforcement. So, he does seem a bit conflicted over what to do with the key (I think he wasn't entirely sure, especially not knowing what she had planned for him -- if he'd gotten kicked out of the SSR, he might've been thinking about holding onto the key as leverage) but Peggy telling him he's a good person and that she's not planning to use the Vernon thing against him was the catalyst for him giving her the key, much like one of the main factors in his eventual heel face turn two episodes ago was Peggy putting her faith in him not to go ahead and use the fake file against her. As opposed to the way he reacted to rejection in 2x03 (from both Peggy and Daniel), which was to basically double down on his bad decision making and, in essence, seek affirmation from people like Vernon and the Arena Club.

that the show is being hetted up as a personal insult to them Ah, gotta love shippers. I mean, I agree that the show should have queer representation! But it wasn't going to be with Peggy.

I never in my wildest dreams thought we'd get as much of a redemption arc this season as we did with him Hah, I actually had the opposite feeling! I was expecting a clear heel face turn at the beginning of this season, but they made it a lot more protracted than I was expecting. And he's still has plenty of flaws, which I like. It would be unrealistic to expect him to instantly be a better person.

is that Jack responds really well to positive reinforcement

Hmm, this is interesting, and I think you're probably right. He also seems to operate on the assumption that other people are going to betray him, which makes it interesting that he was willing to hand Peggy that piece of potential blackmail on himself back in S1. (Was it 2x03 where Peggy threatens to use it against him?)

Was it 2x03 where Peggy threatens to use it against him?

Yes, although I don't think that was actually what she intended at all -- that is, I don't think she meant it to be a blackmail threat; she was using it as an emotional goad instead. He clearly took it as a threat, however, as well as being genuinely hurt ...

And yeah, you're right about Jack viewing the world in terms of leverage and blackmail, expecting other people to betray him and then being surprised when he runs into people like Peggy who don't operate that way. I also like that he's not just suddenly turned into a nice guy; he's still a jerk in many ways, and he's still got that ambitious side and that Machiavellian tendency. But he's come so far from where he was!

The thing that gets to me most about Jack and Peggy is how much they clearly care about each other even when they're at each other's throats. It seems to be completely, or at least mostly, platonic (I can definitely ship it in fic, but in the show, it's just friendship) but there is actually quite a lot of affection between them -- except, so much of the time, it's just enough to give them the ability to really hurt each other.

This is what I'm going with! It's a device to make sure people freak out and try to get the series renewed. I don't think they'd kill him permanently...
sholio
Mar. 2nd, 2016 08:25 pm (UTC)
Yes, and TPTB have been emphasizing in interviews and on twitter that "you saw him get shot, you didn't see him die". It is always possible they COULD kill him depending on how they decide to set up the season 3 arc, if they get a season 3, but right now he's only TV-cliffhanger dead, not actually dead (... I mean, SGA dropped an exploding warehouse onto their cast at the end of one season, and they were all fine).

Actually, if the show doesn't get renewed, I think my biggest source of angst is going to be the way they set up my absolute dream h/c scenario here. THIS IS LITERALLY EVERYTHING I EVER WANTED FROM H/C ON THIS SHOW, Jack on death's doorstep with Peggy and Daniel in LA ... and I am going to be a flailing wreck if they give me THAT setup and then I never actually get to SEE it.

Ok, looking up one of the interviews. There's also this TERRIBLE quote: "How do you feel about the show’s chances for a third season? FAZEKAS: Bad." and "I doubt that there’s a Netflix play for it." ARRRGH.

my biggest source of angst is going to be the way they set up my absolute dream h/c scenario here. I KNOW. Of course, knowing the way TV works, they will totally skip over the whole recovery portion, argh. Especially since they already did the 'sitting in a waiting room to see if someone will survive' scene once this season.

.... ohhhh dammit, you're right. Actually, I'm going to make a prediction right now that if the show actually does get a season three, they're going to jump ahead six months or a year in show-time, and make us wait at least an episode or two to find out whether Jack is still around. This is a thing I could definitely see happening. Not what I want to happen, but if I actually get a season three with Jack still alive, I won't even ... well, okay, I was going to say I won't care but actually I do. XD Still, even if I miss all the glorious worry and h/c, I'll definitely take it! I will SO take it!

In the meantime ... FANFIC IS OUR ONLY HOPE.

I actually ragequit Rizzoli & Isles for doing that exact thing. It ended a season on a main-character-got-shot cliffhanger, then picked up six months later. I was so pissed. XD In retrospect, it wasn't just that -- season two was kind of draggy, and I always meant to go back to it eventually, but I do remember the depths of my betrayal when I was all geared up for the next season's premiere to pick up where the cliffhanger left off, and then ... nope.

... still, even if it would be terribly frustrating, in this case I would take it over having the show cancelled and/or Jack being dead. However, I will continue to hold out hope that we can still have it all (while also, er, managing my expectations so as not to be crushed if we get none of it).

We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.
Through the unknown, unremembered gate
When the last of earth left to discover
Is that which was the beginning;
At the source of the longest river
The voice of the hidden waterfall
And the children in the apple-tree
Not known, because not looked for
But heard, half-heard, in the stillness
Between two waves of the sea.
Quick now, here, now, always—
A condition of complete simplicity
(Costing not less than everything)
And all shall be well and
All manner of things shall be well
When the tongues of flame are in-folded
Into the crowned knot of fire
And the fire and the rose are one.
